Philippines Sees Strong Tourism Rebound with 3.3 Million Foreign Arrivals in 2023
Foreign arrivals in the Philippines reached 3.3 million in the first eight months of 2023, approaching the government’s annual goal of 4.8 million. South Korea was the top source of inbound tourists. Trip.com Group reported robust recovery in domestic and international business in 2Q23, with strong growth in domestic hotel bookings in China. However, outbound hotel and air reservations remained down compared to pre-Covid levels. Wyndham Hotels & Resorts signed three new agreements with Indonesia Hospitality Group, expanding its presence in Indonesia. This follows the earlier launch of the Howard Johnson by Wyndham brand in Indonesia. -

Hotel Supply Growth May Not Be as Fast as in the Past

Vietnam Has an Oversupply of Hotels
China hotel RevPAR showed significant year-over-year growth of 50.4% for the week ending July 1, 2023, compared to a decline in 2019 and 7.6% decline in the same period. Vietnam’s international visitor numbers reached 70% of their 2023 projection but remained below expectations due to fierce competition and an economic recession. Domestic tourism in Vietnam is also experiencing a decline. Worldwide Hotels Group made significant acquisitions in Melbourne and Singapore , representing the largest hotel transaction in Melbourne in over six years and the largest single-asset Singapore hotel transaction in Asia Pacific in 2023. -

Australia’s Boutique Hotel Boom Continues
China Hotel RevPAR: China Hotel RevPAR increased by 44% YoY for the week, but compared to the same week in 2019, it was down by -5.9%. Macau Hotel Occupancy: Macau ‘s hotel occupancy rate in May rose by 44.6 percentage points YoY, reaching 78.9%. Three-star hotels had an 81% occupancy rate, while five-star hotels reached 79%. Boutique Hotel Market in Australia: Australia ‘s boutique hotel market is experiencing growth due to a travel evolution sparked by the pandemic. Boutique properties outperformed international hotels in occupancy, ADR, and RevPAR, driven by domestic, leisure-based tourism. -

CBRE Raises Hotel Performance Forecast for 2023
STR reported US RevPAR for the week ended May 13 was down -1.3% year over year, possibly impacted by Mother’s Day timing. CBRE is again raising its forecast for hotel performance this year . The company has revised its forecast for 2023 RevPAR to $97.89, up 6.0% YOY and an increase of $0.43 from its previous forecast. Saudi Arabia Signs to Get IHG, Accor and Rotana Hotels
STR reported China hotel data for the week ended May 6. Hotel RevPAR in China was up 140.9% year over year. The South China Morning Post said Macau’s casinos are still struggling with finding labor as hotel rooms stay shut and the resorts are unable to fully satiate the booming demand from mainland China tourists . Araiya Hotels and Resorts and Kamakhya Hospitality Services Private Limited announced plans for a new urban resort Soul by Araiya, Dharamshala, A Kamakhya Hotel , anticipated to open in Q4 2023.
