Ultraluxury Resort Boom in Japan
Asian ultraluxury resort companies are expanding into Japan to cater to wealthy overseas travelers and take advantage of the weak yen, with Soneva Holdings planning to open resorts in Japan by 2027 and investing 100 billion yen in new properties. Foreign investment in Japanese hotels increased significantly in recent years, with 2022 seeing a sixfold increase compared to the previous year, and an expected total of 128.5 billion yen in investments in the first six months of the current year. International hotel brands like InterContinental, Wyndham, Marriott, Hyatt, and Accor are actively expanding their presence in various regions, including India, Vietnam, China, Thailand, and Australia, offering a diverse range of accommodations and amenities. -

China’s Golden Week Hotel RevPAR up 53% Over 2019 Numbers
Hotel RevPAR in China surged by 77.2% year over year due to Golden Week, with a 53.2% increase compared to 2019. Japan’s hotel industry saw an elevated average daily rate in July but struggled with occupancy recovery. Melbourne’s hotel industry reported a decline in RevPAR in September despite increased occupancy, and October occupancy is on par with the previous year. -

Japan’s Inbound Tourism Surges Thanks to Gulf Countries
China hotel RevPAR increased by 27.9% year over year and by 13.7% when compared to 2019. Japan experienced a resurgence in inbound tourism, with GCC countries leading the way, and June 2023 saw 72% of the visitor numbers compared to June 2019. Several hotels, including W Sydney , W Macao Studio City , and The Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel , have announced openings and renovations to cater to the recovering travel demand. Additionally, CapitaLand Ascott Trust signed a Memorandum of Understanding for acquiring lodging assets in the UK, Ireland, and Indonesia. -

Macau Labor Day Numbers Exceed Expectations
STR reported China hotel RevPAR for the week ended April 29 was up 138.2% year over year. The Association of Macao Tourist Agents said the first Labor Day holiday after lifting all Covid curbs had exceeded expectations. The General Statistics Office of Vietnam said the number of Chinese citizens traveling to Vietnam is on the rise with 112,000 visiting in April, up 61.5% year on year. -

Las Vegas Sands’ Marina Bay Sands in Singapore has completed the renovations on over 850 hotels rooms. Millennium Hotels announced the launch of M Social in Suzhou , the maiden property for the brand in China. -
