China Reopens to Tourists But Hurdles Remain
Oxford Economics said tourist arrivals into the Asia Pacific region are tipped to reach around 50% of pre-Covid levels in 2023. China will resume issuing visas to foreign tourists for the first time since the pandemic broke out more than three years ago. China’s Average ADR Surpassed 2019 Levels During Lunar New Year
STR said during the seven-day Lunar New Year holiday period, China’s hotel average daily rate surpassed 2019 levels . In the recently released China Construction Pipeline Trend Report from Lodging Econometrics , analysts report the country’s total hotel construction pipeline, at the close of the fourth quarter, stands at 3,581 projects/675,074 rooms. Morgan Stanley said Macau’s hotel occupancy and daily room rates are showing unprecedented strength in the post-Chinese New Year period with at least two hotels fully booked through February and many others close to capacity. -

Spark by Hilton Is a Conversion Favorite
BofA Securities initiated coverage on Marriott Vacations with a Neutral rating and a $180 price target. The Wall Street Journal published an article on how hotel companies are stepping up efforts to lure competitors’ hotels to their own brands. The article referenced Hilton’s new Spark by Hilton brand. We had heard those concerns about upcoming maturities from Service Properties Trust when we were positive about their resumption of the previous dividend, giving them an 11% yield at the time. -

Vegas Strip Operators Accused of Price Colluding
Lodging stocks were modestly higher. The biggest movers included ABNB and SOHO both rising 5% while SONDwas down -6% on the day. Hotel Asset Value Enhancement gave their findings of the ALIS conference.Attendees believe the frustrating transaction market will change in the second half of this year and that there will be more transactions than foreclosures this year. A class-action lawsuit filed Wednesday alleges that four of the main Las Vegas Strip resort operators colluded, via data-sharing software, to artificially inflate the prices of their hotel rooms. -

STR reported US lodging data for the week ended 11/19. US hotel RevPAR was up 20.1% year over year while up 19.3% for the same week in 2019. Following weeks of preliminary groundwork, construction has finally begun on the new Moxy Asheville – North Carolina’s first Moxy Hotel. Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc . is partnering with Proof & Co.’s beverage consultancy arm to revamp the bar experience at all of its Waldorf Astoria properties.
